Golden Arms in Bulgaria for World Championships, NHIA Secures Team

Ghana’s national armwrestling team, the Golden Arms, has arrived in Albena, Bulgaria, to compete at the 46th World Armwrestling Championship and the 27th Para Armwrestling Championship, running from September 10–23, 2025. The prestigious event has attracted over 1,300 athletes from 92 countries.

Team Ghana will be spearheaded by three of its brightest stars:

  • Daniel Acquah (Ghana Prisons Service) – Four-time African gold medalist, making his world debut in the Youth 60kg men’s category.
  • Mabel Yeboah (Ghana Prisons Service) – Calm but fierce competitor, targeting glory in the Youth 60kg women’s category after her African quadruple-gold triumph.
  • Blessed Abeka Nunoo (Ghana Immigration Service) – Determined to improve on her 4th-place finish at the last World Championship, contesting in the Girls 65kg class.

Unfortunately, Ghana will miss the services of Grace Mintah, reigning World Champion and Police Officer, who has been sidelined by injury. Her absence is a blow, but the team remains resolute and focused on delivering podium finishes.

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has played a pivotal role in securing the Golden Arms’ participation. Over the past three years, NHIA has provided health insurance, training support, and logistical assistance, enabling the team to prepare at elite levels.

NHIA CEO, Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, emphasized the Authority’s dual mission:

“We are committed to ensuring a healthy nation through active sports participation. Supporting armwrestling helps reduce future health costs while inspiring national pride. We are proud to be associated with the Golden Arms and will continue supporting them toward gold in the 2027 African Games in Egypt.”

The Golden Arms have already established themselves as Africa’s top force, boasting a cumulative medal tally of 405 medals at continental and world events. With competition scheduled for September 13–14, the Ghanaian athletes will be tested against the world’s finest, but they carry momentum from their recent dominance at the 2024 African Games and 2025 African Championships.

GAF President, Mr. Charles Osei Asibey, expressed confidence in the team’s resilience and commitment:

“We may be few, but the Golden Arms have proven time and again that we are among the best in the world. We are going to Bulgaria to win
